Welcome to the Virus Encyclopedia of Panda Security.
Lovgate.K is a worm that spreads via e-mail (as a reply to the messages in the Inbox in Outlook) and across shared network drives.
Lovgate.K creates a large number of copies of itself. It also sends out a large number of e-mail messages to the contacts it finds in the Inbox and in other locations where e-mail addresses are stored.
Lovgate.K also acts as a backdoor type Trojan as it opens a port and tries to obtain the network administrator user name and password.
The danger of Lovgate.K lies in the fact that it spreads rapidly, as it uses several different means (mainly e-mail and computer networks).
Lovgate.K is difficult to recognize, as it reaches computers in an e-mail message with variable characteristics. It can also spread across shared network drives, without displaying any messages or warnings that indicate that it has infected a computer.
For details of the characteristics of the e-mail message carrying Lovgate.K and its infection process across network drives consult the section Means of transmission.
