The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) provides remote display and input capabilities over network connections for Windows-based applications running on a server.
The affected versions are:
- RDP Version 5.0 on Windows 2000.
- RDP Version 5.1 on Windows XP/2000.
- RDP Version 5.2 on Windows 2003/XP/2000.
- RDP Version 6.0 on Windows Vista/2003/XP.
- RDP Version 6.1 on Windows 2008/Vista/XP.
- Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0.
If exploited successfully, MS09-044 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.
This vulnerability is usually exploited by creating a specially crafted website and enticing users to visit it. This malicious link can be distributed via different means, like email messages or instant messaging programs.
