|worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is a group of important vulnerabilities in different Windows Media Components on Windows 2008/Vista/2003/XP/2000 computers, which allows arbitrary code to be remotely executed in the vulnerable computer and information to be disclosed.|
The affected Windows Media components are:
- Windows Media Player 6.4 on Windows 2003/XP/2000.
- Windows Media Format Runtime 7.1, 9.0, 9.5 and 11 on Windows 2008/Vista/2003/XP/2000.
- Windows Media Services on Windows 2008/2003/2000.
If exploited successfully, MS08-076 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged on user and to gain the user's NTLM credentials.
This vulnerability is usually exploited by hosting a malicious server share or website that requires authentication and enticing users to access it. The link to the malicious server share or website website can be distributed through different means such as email or instant messaging programs.
