Common name:Marker.AO
Technical name:W97M/Marker.AO
Threat level:Low
Alias:W97M/Marker.AR
Type:Virus
Effects:

It infects Word's global template and obtains information from the affected computer and sends it out.

Affected platforms:

Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT/ME/98/95

Detection updated on:April 23, 2002
StatisticsNo
Family:MARKER

Brief Description

Marker.AO is a macro virus that infects Word global template (NORMAL.DOT file) and all the documents generated with it. By doing so, it will infect all the documents that the user opens, closes, saves, etc.

In addition, Marker.AO obtains confidential user information and sends it to the virus author.

Marker.AO reaches computers in an infected Word document (a file with a DOC extension), using the typical means of virus transmission, among others, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, e-mail messages with attached files, Internet downloads, FTP, IRC channels, peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, etc.

Visible Symptoms

Marker.AO is difficult to recognize, as it does not show any messages or warnings that indicate it has reached the computer.

However, a clear indication that Marker.AO has infected those documents containing macros, is that the warning messages that allow Word documents to be opened without enabling their macros, are disabled.
