Brief Description

MS08-005 is not categorized as virus, worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is an important vulnerability in Internet Information Services on Windows Vista/2003/XP/2000 computers, which allows local privilege escalation in the vulnerable computer. The affected versions of IIS are 5.0, 5.1, 6.0 and 7.0.

If exploited successfully, MS08-005 allows to gain unauthorized privileges on a computer or network. An example of privilege elevation would be an unprivileged user who could manage to be added to the Administrator's group. In such case, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.

In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would have to be able to upload a script to an affected IIS server and be able to run the script. This uploaded script would need write access to the FTPRoot, NNTPFile\Root or WWWRoot folders.

If you have a Windows Vista/2003/XP/2000 computer, it is recommended to download and apply the security patch for this vulnerability. Click here to access the web page for downloading the patch.
