Brief Description

Wrench.C is a macro virus that is not considered dangerous, as the main actions of this virus are to spread rapidly, disable Word options and display messages in the infected computer.

If the user attempts to access the Visual Basic Editor or Organizer options, Word will close. Any information that has not been saved since the beginning of the session will therefore be lost.

It is easy to become infected by Wrench.C, as it can reach computers in an infected Word document through any means. It will then infect Word 97 documents and the template that this program uses for all its documents.

Visible Symptoms

Clear indications that Wrench.C has infected a computer can be noticed when the users performs certain operations:

  • It disables the  Visual Basic Editor option (in Tools Macro), displaying the following false error message when the user tries to enable this option:
    Microsoft Word
This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down
    .

    It will then close Word.
  • It closes Word if the user clicks on the Organizer button in Tools – Macro – Macros
  • It displays an image on screen if the user tries to access the option About Microsoft Word (in the Help (?) menu).
