Effects
Spammer.ALU allows hackers to get into and carry out dangerous actions in affected computers, such as capturing screenshots, stealing personal data, etc.
It accesses several websites from which it downloads and runs files. The downloads can be any type of file, although they are normally malware.
It avoids being detected by the user by using the following techniques:
- It terminates processes belonging to several security tools, such as antivirus programs and firewalls, so they cannot warn the user of the presence of this malware on the computer.
It causes a loss of productivity in remote systems:
- It mass mails junk mail (spam).
Means of transmission
Propagation via email:
Spammer.ALU carries out the following process:
- It arrives in an email message with an attachment. The message tries to trick users into thinking that the attachment is an interesting application, images, etc.
- When the user runs the attachment, the computer is infected.
- Spammer.ALU sends itself to a set of contacts, which it obtains through the address books of programs such as Outlook or MSN Messenger, or searching for email addresses in files with specific extensions (WAB, HTM, HTML, TXT, etc).
