MS05-010 is not categorized as virus, worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is a critical vulnerability in the License Logging service of several Windows Server products, such as NT Server, 2000 Server and 2003 Server, which allows to remotely execute arbitrary code in the vulnerable computer.
If exploited successfully, MS05-010 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged-on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.
However, if the attacked computer has Windows 2003 Server installed, this vulnerability results in a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.
MS05-010 is exploited by creating a specially crafted network message, which is then sent to the vulnerable computer. A firewall could prevent attacks carried out from the Internet.
If you have a Windows 2003/2000/NT Server computer, it is recommendable to download and apply the security patch for this vulnerability. Click here to access the web page for downloading the patch.>
