Altnet is an spyware program that reaches the computer when the user installs the peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing program KaZaA Media Desktop.
Seemingly, Altnet rewards users with points when they use KaZaA Media Desktop in order to share contents that are licensed. These points can be exchanged for more licensed content.
However, when the user searches for contents in KaZaA Media Desktop, Altnet inserts links to content offered by recording industries and advertisements related to the keywords used in the search.
Altnet is easy to recognize, as it adds an icon to the Windows Taskbar. If this icon is double-clicked, it displays the following window on screen:
