StartPage.AV is a Trojan that changes the home page of the browser Internet Explorer and its default search options.
When it is run, StartPage.AV goes memory resident and opens an Internet Explorer window that informs about supposed security dangers and invites to download an utility.
Afterwards, StartPage.AV connects to a website and receives a list of links, which it adds to the Favorites folder.
StartPage.AV does not spread automatically using its own means. It needs the attacking user’s intervention in order to reach the affected computer. The means of transmission used include, among others, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, e-mail messages with attached files, Internet downloads, FTP, IRC channels, peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, etc.
