WM/Generic not an specific virus, but a generic detection for future variants of the Generic family. This group of viruses has the following characteristics:
- They infect Word 95 files, rendering them unusuable.
- They do not spread automatically using their own means. They need the attacking user's intervention in order to reach the affected computer. The means of transmission used include, among others, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, e-mail messages with attached files, Internet downloads, FTP, IRC channels, peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, etc.
- They can always be disinfected.
WM/Generic is dificcult to recognize, as it does not display any messages or warnings that indicate it has reached the computer.
