Groov.B is a macro virus that renames the C: volume label to groovie. It also displays messages on screen.
In addition, like most macro viruses:
Reaches systems in an infected Word 97 document (DOC extension). From there, it infects Word’s global template (NORMAL.DOT file), spreading its infection to all the Word files created with this template.
The virus modifies Word properties and disables certain Word options.
Groov.B shows some infection symptoms, although it is necessary to know where they are carried out in order to detect them:
- It modifies the properties in the Word documents it infects:
Comments: ALT-F11 says it's groovie!"
This modification can be seen through the Summary tab in the Properties option in the Word's File menu.
It prevents users from accessing the Macro and Templates and Add-Ins options in the Tools menu.
When users access the Visual Basic Editor (either through Tools- Macro –Visual Basic Editor or using the Alt + F11 keys), the virus displays the following window:
