|worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is an important vulnerability in VBScript Scripting Engine affecting different versions of VBScript, which allows arbitrary code to be remotely executed in the vulnerable computer.|
VBScript (Visual Basic Script) is a language normally used to make websites more flexible or interactive.
The affected VBScript versions are the following:
- 5.1 on Windows 2000
- 5.6 on Windows 2003/XP/2000.
- 5.7 on Windows 2008/Vista/2003/XP/2000.
- 5.8 on Windows 7/2008/Vista/2003/XP.
If exploited successfully, MS10-022 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.
This vulnerability is usually exploited by creating a specially crafted web page that displays a dialog box and enticing users to access it and press the F1 key, which belongs to the Help function, while the dialog box is being displayed.
If you have any of the vulnerable VBScript versions, it is recommended to download and apply the security patch for this vulnerability. Click here to access the web page for downloading the patch.
