Welcome to the Virus Encyclopedia of Panda Security.
Shepmah is a macro virus that infects Word documents, as well as the global template (NORMAL.DOT file). Its most destructive action is that it modifies the names of the system directories. As a result, the infected computer will not start properly and Windows programs will not work correctly.
Shepmah uses any of the means normally used by macro viruses to spread. First of all, it infects the global template, and from then on, it will infect every word document opened, closed or saved on the affected computer.
In addition, Shepmah modifies the properties of infected documents and eliminates all the files with a DOT extension (templates) that Word uses. These files are stored in the directory in which the program is installed.
A clear indication that Shepmah has infected computer are the following properties in the Summary tab:
Once infection has been carried out, Shepmah displays up to seven different animations every seven seconds.
