Sampo is a boot virus that infects the boot sector of floppy disks and the Master Boot Record (MBR)of hard disks.
Sampo only infects computers that use an infected floppy disk.
Once the computer uses an infected floppy disk, Sampo goes memory resident and infects all floppy disks used in the computer, provided that they are not write-protected.
Sampo tricks the user into removing the protection of floppy disks. This action is carried out through a virus called Kampana.
A clear indication that Sampo has infected a computer is that when the system date is November 30 and the computer has been switched on for two hours, the following message is displayed in a blue text box in the top right of the screen:
