How do I configure Panda GateDefender Integra to use WINS servers with PPTP and L2TP VPNs?

One of the limitations of implementing VPN solutions based on the PPTP and L2TP protocols is that, for security reasons, broadcast traffic (traffic sent to all the hosts in a subnet) is not let through to an internal subnet, when accessed through a VPN tunnel.

For this reason, in networks in which the NETBIOS service is used to resolve the names of the internal LAN resources, such as servers, hosts and printers, it is essential to include the details of the corresponding WINS servers in the VPN settings.

Panda GateDefender Integra can send this information along with the new IP addresses assigned to remote users.

Steps for configuring Integra to use WINS for PPTP and L2TP VPNs

To enable use of WINS for PPTP or L2TP VPNs, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Panda GateDefender Integra administration console.
  2. Click on VPN in the panel on the left.
  3. Select VPN management, and then PPTP (or L2TP) VPN management.
  4. The next screen shows the necessary parameters to configure a VPN in GateDefender Integra using PPTP (L2TP).
  5. Enter the IP address of the primary WINS server. By clicking on the icon next to the WINS servers options, you can change the text field. You can do this through a drop-down menu, from which you can choose the value to assign to this option (in this case, WINS).
  6. Click on OK to save the changes.

Apart from modifying the VPN settings, you must also define a new firewall rule that permits NETBIOS traffic from IP addresses reserved for remote VPN users to the WINS servers (from roadwarrior to gateway).

Firewall rule

  1. Go to the Panda GateDefender Integra administration console. Then, click on Firewall in the panel on the left.
  2. Click on Add to define a new rule.
  3. First, define a new service group that unites the three corresponding NETBIOS services. To do this, click on the Service settings link next to Service and click on Add. The services you must select are those shown in the screenshot below:

  4. The new firewall rule will be applied to traffic sent from the IP addresses reserved for remote users (in this case, PPTP VPN). The IP address of the internal WINS server must be specified as the destination. This rule will be applied to the services defined in the previous step (in this case, NETBIOS VPN), as shown in the screenshot below:

  5. Click on OK to save the changes.

Another way to enable use of WINS servers is based on the VPN settings of the remote user, where the WINS server and the definitions of each NETBIOS resource can be entered through the static entries in lmhosts.
