What is the difference between the transparent and router modes in Panda GateDefender Integra?

Information applies to:

Products
Panda GateDefender Integra 100
Panda GateDefender Integra 300

Transparent mode

When working in transparent mode, Panda GateDefender Integra uses two network interfaces:

  • One interface is connected to the external network (which could be the Internet, the WAN connection or simply a connection to the rest of the company's network if the appliance is located within the corporate network)
  • Another interface is connected to the internal network.

In this mode, Panda GateDefender Integra offers IPS, anti-malware, anti-spam, web filter and content filter functions.

The information displayed is the following:

  • Interface: Appliance network connection.
  • MAC address: Physical address of the network card.
  • Speed: Connection speed. This could be 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps.
  • Zone: Network zone to which it is connected.
  • Status: Active or inactive, and the mode of functioning of the card.

Router mode

In Router mode, Panda GateDefender Integra can use all the network interfaces (four or eight depending on model). The administrator can assign the interfaces to different network zones, either the default zones (WAN, LAN and DMZ), or a zone defined by the user.

This mode is the best for small companies that want all the functions in a single machine, thereby avoiding having a dedicated computer for each of them. In this case, the administrator should configure the routing table with the appropriate addresses.

In Router mode, the appliance offers, in addition to the functionalities described in Transparent mode, additional functions such as the firewall system (to allow or deny traffic between different networks connected to the appliance) and the VPN system (both in server and client mode).

The information displayed in the console is:

  • Interface: Appliance network connection.
  • Name: Descriptive name of the interface.
  • Network address: Interface IP address.
  • VLAN: Optional field displaying the VLAN number.
  • Zone: Network zone to which it is connected. This could be any of the predefined zones (LAN, WAN and DMZ) or those created by the user.
  • Status: Active or inactive.
