Role es un concepto lógico que se introduce en Exchange Server 2007 y Exchange Server 2010 para organizar los servicios y las características entre los diferentes servidores.
Los roles del servidor permitirán al administrador separar la funcionalidad de un servidor Exchange permitiendo una gran versatilidad de configuraciones a medida de las necesidades del cliente.
Los roles configurables en Exchange Server 2007 y Exchange Server 2010 son: Edge Transport role, Hub Transport role, Mailbox role, Client Access role y Unified Messaging role.
