PandaLabs will present its innovative Collective Intelligence technology at Virus Bulletin 2008. Collective Intelligence is Panda’s response to the exponential increase in Internet threats, as it automates the detection and analysis of malware, as well as the preparation of vaccines. Panda pioneered this type of technology in 2007. This year it has taken a step further, by exploiting this technology to create the first antivirus solutions that protect ‘from the cloud’.

Virus Bulletin is a leading global publication on IT security. Its annual conference has become one of the most important dates in the calendar for experts in the fight against malware and cyber-threats. This year will see the 16th edition of this event held in Ottawa, Canada from October 1 to 3.

Ismael Briones, PandaLabs Malware Researcher, will be giving a presentation on behalf of PandaLabs entitled: “Graph, entropy and grid computing: automatic comparison of malware”. He will be emphasizing the need for security laboratories to automate the process of collecting and analyzing malware, something that Panda Security began to do two years ago, with Collective Intelligence.

This innovative model is based on the automatic collection and analysis of information about malware from the Internet community. As the knowledge is accumulated on Panda servers and not on clients’ computers, Collective Intelligence maximizes the detection capacity of Panda products while reducing clients’ bandwidth usage and resource consumption.

Collective Intelligence actually comprises several technologies and is not based solely on comparing each malware example received with a known malware database. Some of these technologies allow new malware to be classified based, among other techniques, on its graphic representation (graphs), the packet system used and the comparison of the size and characteristics of each file against Panda’s malware and goodware database (one of the largest in the world).

The improvement and expansion of this technology has been possible thanks to samples received from a global network of more than four million sensors. All these technologies allow Panda to offer greater detection capacity and speed when protecting the user community, as many processes are completely automatic and do not require human intervention. In his presentation at Virus Bulletin 2008, Ismael Briones will be explaining some of these technologies.

The PandaLabs researcher will use the graph theory as a method for identifying similar functions between malware samples. This system helps minimize human error and false positives when detecting and analyzing malware samples.

“Previous research into graph theory has proven to be useful in finding similarities between malware variants, however, these systems are yet to offer adequate performance. To address this, at Virus Bulletin 2008 we will be presenting various methods that can be used to solve the performance issue”, explains Briones.

About Panda Security

Since 1990, its mission has been to analyze new threats as rapidly as possible to keep our clients safe. Several teams, each specialized in a specific type of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, phishing, spam, etc), work 24/7 to provide global coverage. To achieve this, they also have the support of TruPrevent® Technologies, which act as a global early-warning system made up of strategically distributed sensors to neutralize new threats and send them to PandaLabs for in-depth analysis. According to Av.Test.org, PandaLabs is currently the fastest laboratory in the industry in providing complete updates to users. More information is available in the PandaLabs blog.
