Brief Description

CodBot.AP is a worm with backdoor characteristics that connects to several IRC servers in order to receive control commands, such as download files via HTTP and run them, check the computer for currently known vulnerabilities, log keystrokes in order to capture the passwords entered by the user, obtain the passwords stored in the Protected Storage service, such as passwords for Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and MSN Messenger, etc.

CodBot.AP spreads across the Internet, by exploiting the vulnerabilities LSASS and RPC DCOM, which affect Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT computers. The worm does not function correctly on Windows Me/98/95 computers.

Additionally, it exploits several vulnerabilities in computers with SQL Server installed, and also attempts to gain access to them by trying several user names and passwords.

If you have a Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT computers, it is very recommendable to download and install the security patches for the LSASS and RPC DCOM vulnerabilities.

Visible Symptoms

CodBot.AP is difficult to recognize, as it does not display any messages or warnings that indicate it has reached the computer.

However, keep in mind that provided that this worm does not function correctly on Windows Me/98/95 computers, an error message will be displayed when it is run on those operating systems.
