Brief Description

MS05-009 is not categorized as virus, worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is a critical vulnerability in the following programs:

  • Windows Media Player 9 series, on Windows 2003/XP (Service Pack 1)/2000 computers.
  • Windows Messenger v5.0.
  • MSN Messenger v6.1.
  • MSN Messenger v6.2.

These programs are vulnerable because they do not handle properly certain specially crafted PNG (Portable Network Graphics) image files.

If exploited successfully, MS05-009 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged-on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.

MS05-009 is exploited by hosting a malicious PNG file in a website, and enticing users into accessing it. An e-mail message with a malicious PNG attached file could also be used.

If you have any of the vulnerable programs installed on your computer, it is recommendable to download and apply the security patch for this vulnerability. Click here to access the web page for downloading the patch.
