Mapson.C is a worm that ends several processes belonging to Windows tools, as well as several antivirus programs and aplications such as firewalls. This would leave the affected computer vulnerable to the attack of malware.
Mapson.C spreads via email, through peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs and via IRC channels.
Mapson.C is easy to recognize once it has affected the computer, as it displays the following symptoms:
- When it reaches the computer, the executable file belonging to Mapson.C has the same icon as a text file, in order to deceive users making them believe that it is harmless.
- In October, it displays the following messages on screen:
- Additionally, on the fourth of every month, it displays a message window with information about the virus creator, and it opens the Internet Explorer browser at the following web page:
