Detection updated on:Feb. 17, 2003
StatisticsNo

Brief Description

Tang is a dangerous worm that usually reaches computers in an e-mail message with variable characteristics, although it can also spread through IRC channels, such as mIRC, pIRCH and VIRC and peer-to-peer file sharing applications (P2P) like KaZaA, Edonkey 2000 or Morpheus.

Tang searches for files with SCR, PIF, MP3, MP2, GIF, BMP, DIB, PNG, JPG, JPEG, JPE, TIF, TIFF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, AVI, MOV, TMP, TXT, LNK, BAT, MDB, PPT and PPS extensions in certain directories and deletes them.

It can also act as a macro virus in order to infect the Office files used on affected computers.

Visible Symptoms

Tang is easy to recognize once it has affected the computer, as it displays the following message on screen:

The path that appears in this false error message (in this case C:\ VIRUS\ W32TANG.EXE) corresponds to the directory in which the worm is run and the name of the file that has affected the computer.

For example, if this file was FILE.EXE and it was stored in the directory C:\ Work, the error message would be: C:\ WORK\ FILE.EXE is not a valid Win32 application.
