Caput is a macro virus that does not have any destructive effects, which affects Word documents, as well as the global template used by this application.
Caput modifies the text on the infected documents, replacing all the instances of the string 19 with the text CAPut! Thus, the dates comprised between 1900 and 1999 will become unrecognizable. Caput carries out this action with a one per cent probability.
Caput uses the normal means of infection used by macro viruses. Firstly, it infects the global template and then, it will infect all the documents that are opened, closed or saved in the affected computer.
Caput disables the Word macro antivirus protection, so that the user will not be asked for confirmation to run or disable the macros included in Word documents. Moreover, Caput avoids the access to the Visual Basic Editor, preventing the user from working with macros.
Caput is easy to recognize once it has carried out its infection, as it shows the following symptoms:
