Brief Description

Service.A is a macro virus  that reaches computers in a Word 97 document attached to an e-mail message. This message’s subject is variable, but the most usual text is Version finale.

The infected Word 97 document is mailed out only to French e-mail addresses (ending with .fr).

This virus’s effects are not destructive, but they can affect the user’s work with Word:

  • It infects every file with a DOC extension used on the affected computer.
  • It prevents Word 97 macros from being used and disables the Word macro antivirus protection.
  • It inserts texts in infected documents.

Visible Symptoms

The first symptom of Service.A is an e-mail message with the subject Version finale.

For more detailed information about the characteristics of the message that carries Service.A, consult the section Means of transmission.

Once it has carried out infection, Service.A can insert different texts in open Word documents:

  • In four out of a hundred times, the virus inserts the following Web addresses in the place in which the cursor is located:

http:// sn.agat.net
http:// altern.org/ gigm/ service.htm
Panda Security.donquichotte.com
http:// www.multimania.com/ antisn

  • In 1% of all cases, Service.A insert the following text in the place in which the cursor is located.

Oui à l'Emploi, Oui à l'armée de métier, mais Non au service national sous contrat de travail, Non à l'absurdité
