Brief Description

Groov.AN is a macro virus that has a wide range of effects, the most important ones are:

  • It tries to send a file with information from the infected computer to an Internet address, through the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
  • It displays messages on screen.
  • It renames the C: volume label to groovie.

Groov.AN reaches systems in an infected Word 97 document (DOC extension). From there, it infects Word’s global template (NORMAL.DOT file), spreading its infection to all the Word files created with this template. The virus modifies Word properties and disables certain Word options.

Visible Symptoms

Groov.AN shows some infection symptoms, although it is necessary to know where they are carried out in order to detect them:

  • It modifies the properties of the infected Word documents. The virus does this by including the following text string in the Comments field:
    ALT-F11 says it's groovie!".
This modification can be seen through the Summary tab in the Properties option in the Word’s File menu.
  • It prevents users from accessing the Macro and Templates and Add-Ins options in the Tools menu.
  • When users access the Visual Basic Editor (either through Tools- Macro –Visual Basic Editor or using the Alt + F11 keys), the virus displays the following window:
