Brief Description

Nottice.A is a macro virus that generates a Word template (IMPORTANT NOTTICE.DOT) and opens it automatically every December 13. After displaying this document, the virus pretends to block the computer.

As most macro viruses, Nottice.A does not have a destructive payload. In fact, its main aim is to spread, infecting and disabling Word options as well as the global template used in Word documents.

Visible Symptoms

On December 13 of every year, Nottice.A creates the following document and automatically opens it:

Next, it pretends to block the system. However, if the user presses ESC, a window appears that informs the user that the macro was  interrupted.

If users click on OK, the window is closed and they can continue their work.
