Common name:Goober.C
Technical name:W97M/Goober.C
Threat level:Low
Type:Virus
Effects:  It infects Word 97 documents and repairs the damaged cause by a variant of this virus: Goober.A.

Affected platforms:

Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT/ME/98/95

Detection updated on:Oct. 10, 2000
StatisticsNo
Family:VALENTIN

Brief Description

Goober.C is a macro virus that reaches computers in an infected Word 97 document with a DOC extension. From there it infects the Word global template (NORMAL.DOT file) and spreads to all the Word files generated with this template.

Goober.C disables the macro antivirus protection incorporated in Word, the Macro option in the Tools menu and other options in the Word menu.

Another interesting characteristic of Goober.C is that it repairs the damaged caused by another variant of this virus: Goober.A.

Visible Symptoms

Goober.C is very difficult to recognize, as it does not display any messages or warnings that indicate that it has infected a computer.

However, a file called GOOBER.SYS in the root directory of the hard disk could mean that Goober.C has infected the computer.
