Brief Description

Melissa.W is a macro virus that reaches computers in an infected Word 2001 document. By using this version, it can infect files created both for the Windows and Macintosh versions of Word.

Like most macro viruses, Melissa.W reaches computers in an infected Word document. This document infects Word’s global template (NORMAL.DOT file), spreading its infection to all Word files generated with it.

Melissa.W does not carry out any dangerous actions on the infected computers, as its only aim is to spread via e-mail in a Word 2001 document attached to a message with the following subject: Impotant Message From <user´s name>.

Visible Symptoms

Melissa.W is easy to identify, as it reaches computers in an e-mail message with the following characteristics:

  • Subject:
    Impotant Message From <user’s name>
  • Message:
Here is that document you asked for ... don't show anyone else ;-).
  • Attachment: A Word 2001 document.
