|worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is a critical vulnerability in Visual Basic for Applications, which allows arbitrary code to be remotely executed in the vulnerable computer.|
VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) is a technology used for developing client desktop packaged applications and integrating them with existing data and systems. Office products include VBA and make use of VBA to perform certain functions.
If exploited successfully, MS10-031 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.
This vulnerability is usually exploited by creating a specially crafted document that supports VBA, like a Word document, Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation, and enticing users to open it. This malicious document can be distributed via email or hosted in a website.

Bear in mind that this security bulletin replaces previous ones, called MS08-013 (for the Office versions) and MS06-047 (for Visual Basic for Applications).
