Brief Description

MS06-047 is not categorized as virus, worm, Trojan or backdoor. It is a critical vulnerability in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which allows arbitrary code to be remotely executed in the vulnerable computer.

Affected programs are:

  • Office XP and 2000.
  • Project 2000 Service Release 1.
  • Access 2000 Runtime Service Pack 3.
  • Project 2002 Service Pack 1.
  • Visio 2002 Service Pack 2.
  • Works Suite 2006, 2005 and 2004.
  • Visual Basic for Applications SDK 6.4, 6.3, 6.2 and 6.0.

If exploited successfully, MS06-047 allows hackers to gain remote control of the affected computer with the same privileges as the logged on user. If this user had administrator rights, the hacker could take complete control of the system: create, modify or delete files, install programs, create new user accounts, etc.

This vulnerability is exploited by creating a specially crafted document that supports VBA (Word document, Excel spreadsheet, etc.) and enticing users into opening it. It is also possible to create a malicious web page that exploits this vulnerability.

If you have any of the vulnerable versions mentioned above, it is recommendable to download and apply the security patch for this vulnerability. Click here to access the web page for downloading the patch.
