Brief Description

Lentin.E is a worm that reaches computers in a file attached to an e-mail message with a variable subject.

It is very easy to become infected by this virus, as it automatically activates when the message is viewed through Outlook's Preview Pane. In order to do this, it exploits a vulnerability in Internet Explorer (versions 5.01 and 5.5) called Exploit/iFrame. This allows files attached to e-mail message to be run automatically.

Lentin.E is dangerous because:

  • It activates every time a file with an EXE extension is run.
  • It ends several processes in affected computers.

Visible Symptoms

It is difficult to recognize the e-mail message carrying Lentin.E, as its characteristics vary each time it is sent.

Lentin.E does not give any clear indication that it has carried out its infection.
