Review Paul Rowlingson [11-07-2001]
Designed for home users, Panda Platinum claims to protect users from every type of virus there is - even currently unknown examples. The viruses are detected at both the desktop and TCP/IP (Winsock) level, and are eliminated before getting to the hard drive(s).

With its simple to operate interface and detailed descriptions of every aspect of the program's functions, this is perfect for the home user market. It provides comprehensive protection without requiring the user to know a great deal about viruses themselves.

Like most virus software it can be scheduled to scan at regular intervals, as well used manually. There are options to scan for viruses when a PC is switched on, or at every reboot. With its optional heuristic scan, Panda Platinum can even detect possible viruses that may be unknown to this program. Should one be discovered a unique SOS service helps resolve the problem in 24 hours.

There is built-in protection against over 57,000 virus types including encrypted, polymorphic, boot, file, macro, Java applets, ActiveX controls, email and internet. Sentinel protection against email and web-borne viruses is included, which will scan POP3, SMTP, HTTP, FTP, mIRC and NNTP traffic in real time. This neutralises viruses before they reach your PC.

An extremely thorough shield against virus attacks from one of the most respected antivirus firms in the business.
Good Points: Thorough scanning; future virus compliant; great usability.
Bad Points: Virus databases cannot be updated in the demo version.
